How's your Tyre health?
Are your tyres road safe? Your tyres take you where you want to go, so you want to take care of them as well! Safety first is always our biggest priority, so here are 4 tips on how to ensure your tyres are in tip-top shape!
What is the right tyre pressure?
Checking your pressure regularly is a good habit to upkeep. Your tyres will naturally lose pressure over time. Keep an eye though as if you are topping up the air when needed you can over inflate your tyres, and this will cause wear and tear and can be just as unsafe as deflated tyres.
Most passenger cars will recommend 32 psi to 35 psi in the tires when they're cold.
What is the Legal tread depth?
New tyres have a tread depth of approximately 8mm. The legal limit for tyre tread is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre.
The tread must meet this minimum requirement around its complete circumference.
We recommend looking to replace your tyres when the tread is around 3mm.
How to check your tyre depth with a 20p coin!
The border around the outside edge of a 20 pence piece is approximately 1.6mm.
Place a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of your tyre. If the outer border is hidden when it is inserted then your tread is above the legal limit.
If you can see the outer border of the coin, then the tyre is either approaching the legal minimum tread depth or has already reached it and requires replacement.
