Highway Code 2021 Update - Are You Up To Date?
Have you heard the news? The official Secretary of State for Transport recently announced Highway Code changes that will place pedestrians at the top of a NEW "Road User Hierarchy”.
The crucial changes have been proposed ahead of a £338 million package to boost cycling and walking, in order to encourage the general public to choose sustainable modes of transportation, thereby helping to clean the air and make our cities greener.
According to Metro, planned Highway Code updates include:
- Increased pedestrian priority on sidewalks and when crossing or waiting to cross the road.
- A road user hierarchy that ensures that those who can cause the most harm bear the most responsibility for reducing the danger they may pose to others.
- Guidance on safe passing distances and speeds, as well as ensuring that cyclists have priority at intersections when travelling straight ahead.
With the aforementioned changes expected to be approved by the government this autumn, we can expect the new Hierarchy to resemble the one shown below;
- Pedestrians
- Cyclists
- Horse Riders
- Motorcyclists
- Cars and Taxis
- Vans and Minibuses
- LGV’s and HGV’s
