Crazy things that could FAIL your MOT! (That you could probably fix yourself) - You won’t believe the last one! 😱
The MOT test is an annual test of vehicle safety, roadworthiness aspects and exhaust emissions required in the United Kingdom for most vehicles over three years old. MOT time can be stressful especially when it fails down to a small fix you probaby could have sorted quite easily before you head to the centre.
Here’s our list of a “pre MOT check” that might just get you that PASS first time!
Tyres
The minimum legal tyre tread depth is 1.6mm so make sure that all of your tyres are comfortably over this or you could be facing a fail on your MOT!
Get hold of a tread depth gauge or use the old 20p hack and ideally change your tyres if they are under 3mm at any point. If you're unsure, head round to your friendly local Eurofit Autocentre.
The 20p Test:
Simply place a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured when it is inserted, then your tread is above the legal limit. If the outer band of the coin is visible, then your tyres may be illegal and unsafe and should be checked immediately by a qualified tyre professional. Eurofit Autocentres is happy to help check this for you with our FREE tyre check.
Window Stickers
Did you know that having window stickers that may obstruct your view could cause you to fail your MOT! If in doubt check with a qualified professional to see if your window stickers are deemed obstructive to your view when driving.
Windscreen Wipers
Make sure your wiper rubber is in good condition and the wiper motors function properly. If your wipers are not fully functioning you will fail your MOT as visibility is a key aspect often checked thoroughly during the MOT test. Also don't forget to top up your windscreen washer fluid - believe it or not, if you're out of screenwash, that's a fail.
Air Freshners
On the subject of visibility - Too many or large and obstructive air freshers or car accessories can fail your MOT if the drivers view is obstructed in anyway.
Number Plate
Another area you may forget about when its time for your MOT time is your vehicle identification. If your number plates are not clean and legible, a stricter MOT centre will fail you, so give them a once-over with a damp cloth before you head off just to be safe.
If you have a custom or personalised plate, make sure the typeface and spacing of letters and numbers comply with the legal requirements.
That concludes our pre MOT check - If in doubt, take advantage of our FREE checks at Eurofit Autocentres and don’t forget to book in for your MOT at our competitive prices.
